We are not about to call anyone out, but yes, you read this headline correctly. There are a lot of chocolate bars out there that contain pork. Beyond the obvious sources of pork  such as ham, bacon, sausage, wieners and such, there are many unexpected sources in the market. If you have been diagnosed with an allergy to pork, you can easily manuver around this allergy with a few pointers.

Pork is just another ingredient to watch out for in many processed and pre-made products. When allergic to pork, one must always sought reliable sources of food products. Make sure you are getting organic products that don't contain any 'filler' ingredients, especially when buying the following products which are known to contain pork:

  • Canned Meats

  • Luncheon Meats

  • Mincemeat

  • Spam

  • Baby Foods

  • Baked beans

  • Bakery products

  • Candy bars

  • Chocolate bars

  • Cocktail dips

  • Fried foods in restaurants

  • Fritos

  • Frosting Mixes

  • Gelatin

  • Ice Cream

  • Instant Foods (such as mashed potatoes)

  • Jell-o

  • Lard

  • Margarine

  • Mayonnaise

  • Mexican Foods

  • Non-dairy creamer

  • Potato Chips

  • Pre-breaded frozen foods

  • Prepared Cake and Pancake mixes

  • processed cheeses (in jars and cartons)

  • Puddings

  • Salad Dressin

  • Shortening

  • Vegetables seasoned with salt pork

Don’t panic, now that you know, you can actually do something about it! The key is to make a habit out of reading labels so we can fill our fridges with quality products. The shorter the ingredient list the better. Last time we checked Lindt Chocolate was pork-free.

Sincerely

Dr Paul Smith & Team
